Symphyotrichum pilosum, commonly known as Frost Aster, is a robust, clump-forming perennial native to North America. It features delicate, daisy-like flowers with white ray petals surrounding a bright yellow center. These flowers are held on branched stems with narrow, lance-shaped leaves, creating a cloud-like effect when in full bloom. Its late-season flowering provides a vital nectar source for pollinators and adds texture and charm to wildflower gardens, borders, and meadows.
Symphyotrichum pilosum thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soils and is tolerant of drought once established. It is highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies and provides seeds for birds in the fall. This low-maintenance, deer-resistant plant works well in naturalized settings, prairies, and pollinator gardens. Pair it with other late-season perennials like goldenrod (Solidago), Joe Pye weed (Eutrochium), or ornamental grasses for a stunning autumn display. Deadheading spent flowers can extend the blooming period, while cutting back in late fall prepares the plant for dormancy.
Sun Requirements:
Full Sun to Partial Shade. Prefers full sun for abundant flowering but tolerates partial shade, especially in hotter climates.
Maximum Growth Height:
36–48 inches (90–120 cm), with a spread of about 24–36 inches (60–90 cm).
Bloom Month:
September to November. Blooms in late summer through fall, providing vibrant color and nectar when many other plants have finished blooming.
