Sempervivum 'Black' is a stunning and hardy succulent known for its rosette-shaped foliage with deep burgundy to black tones, particularly in cooler seasons or full sun exposure. The compact rosettes form dense clusters, with smaller "chicks" surrounding the central "hen." In summer, mature rosettes may produce tall flower stalks topped with star-shaped, pinkish-red flowers, adding an extra layer of interest to this drought-tolerant plant.
Sempervivum 'Black' thrives in well-drained, sandy, or rocky soils and is exceptionally drought-tolerant once established. It is low-maintenance, deer- and rabbit-resistant, and perfect for rock gardens, containers, or dry walls. It pairs well with other succulents or drought-tolerant plants like sedums and ornamental grasses. Minimal care is required; simply remove dead rosettes after flowering and provide occasional water during prolonged dry spells. This unique and resilient plant adds bold color and texture to any garden.
Sun Requirements:
Full Sun to Partial Shade. Prefers full sun for the richest color but can tolerate light shade. Too much shade may result in less vibrant foliage.
Maximum Growth Height:
3–6 inches (7–15 cm), with flower stalks reaching up to 10–12 inches (25–30 cm). The plant spreads by offsets, forming dense clusters up to 12 inches (30 cm) wide.
Bloom Month:
June to August. Blooms in midsummer, though the rosettes that flower typically die back after blooming, leaving space for the surrounding offsets.
