Scrophularia macrantha, commonly known as Red Birds in a Tree, is a unique and striking herbaceous perennial native to the southwestern United States. It is named for its unusual flowers, which resemble tiny red birds perched on branches. These tubular, deep red blooms appear on tall, slender stems above clumps of bright green, serrated foliage. The plant is highly ornamental and an excellent choice for xeriscaping or wildlife-friendly gardens.

Scrophularia macrantha thrives in well-drained, sandy, or rocky soils and is drought-tolerant once established, making it ideal for dry or xeric gardens. It attracts pollinators such as hummingbirds and butterflies, adding ecological value to the landscape. This low-maintenance perennial is deer- and rabbit-resistant and requires little care beyond occasional deadheading to encourage prolonged blooming. Pair it with other drought-tolerant perennials like penstemon, agastache, or salvia for a colorful and water-wise garden display.
