Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii ‘Goldsturm’, commonly known as Goldsturm Black-Eyed Susan, is a dependable herbaceous perennial that produces masses of bright golden-yellow, daisy-like flowers with prominent dark brown to black central cones. The blooms are held on upright, sturdy stems above clumps of dark green, lance-shaped foliage, creating a bold, cheerful, and refined appearance in the garden. Blooming from midsummer into fall, this plant adds long-lasting colour, texture, and pollinator value to borders, cottage gardens, meadow plantings, mass plantings, or sunny perennial beds.
Thrives in well-drained soil with medium moisture. Avoid planting in heavy, waterlogged conditions, though it is adaptable to a range of average garden soils. Requires minimal maintenance once established and shows good heat tolerance. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage a tidier appearance and prolong flowering, or leave seed heads standing for winter interest and wildlife value. Divide clumps every few years to maintain vigour and reduce overcrowding. Pairs well with echinacea, asters, ornamental grasses, monarda, salvia, and sedum for a bright, late-season garden display. Attracts bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Generally avoided by deer and rabbits. Excellent for sunny borders, cottage-style landscapes, pollinator gardens, meadow plantings, mass plantings, cut flower gardens, or low-maintenance perennial displays. Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii ‘Goldsturm’ is a reliable and long-blooming perennial that thrives in sunny gardens, adding vivid golden flowers and strong seasonal impact when many other plants are beginning to fade. Its compact habit, durability, and exceptional pollinator appeal make it a valuable choice for low-maintenance and wildlife-friendly perennial plantings.
