Rhodiola rosea, commonly known as Golden Root or Rose Root, is a hardy, herbaceous perennial native to cold and mountainous regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It forms a low, compact clump of succulent, blue-green, fleshy leaves arranged in a rosette pattern. In late spring to early summer, it produces clusters of small, star-shaped yellow flowers that often have a slight reddish tinge. This plant is known for its medicinal properties and ability to thrive in harsh, rocky environments.
Rhodiola rosea thrives in well-drained, sandy, or rocky soils and is highly drought-tolerant once established, making it ideal for rock gardens, alpine plantings, or xeriscaping. It is low-maintenance, deer-resistant, and attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies. The plant's compact size and adaptability make it a versatile addition to gardens. Regular watering during dry spells will help maintain its health, but it generally requires minimal care. Pair it with other alpine or drought-tolerant plants like sedums, sempervivums, or dianthus for a striking and resilient display.
