Plantago major 'Variegata,' commonly known as Variegated Broadleaf Plantain, is a striking ornamental variety of the common plantain. It is prized for its broad, green leaves with irregular creamy-white or yellow margins, giving it a unique and decorative appearance. The plant forms a low-growing, rosette-like mound and may produce slender spikes of greenish flowers in the summer, though it is primarily grown for its attractive foliage.
Plantago major 'Variegata' is a hardy, low-maintenance plant that thrives in a wide range of soils, including poor or compacted conditions, as long as there is good drainage. It is drought-tolerant once established and resistant to deer and rabbits. This versatile plant works well in rock gardens, borders, or as ground cover, and it pairs beautifully with other foliage-focused plants like hostas, heucheras, or ferns. Deadheading flower spikes can help maintain a tidy appearance if desired. Minimal care is required, making it an excellent addition to any low-maintenance or decorative garden.
Sun Requirements:
Full Sun to Partial Shade. Thrives in full sun, which enhances the variegation, but tolerates partial shade, especially in hotter climates.
Maximum Growth Height:
6–12 inches (15–30 cm), with flower spikes reaching up to 18 inches (45 cm). The plant spreads to about 12–18 inches (30–45 cm).
Bloom Month:
June to September. Produces small, inconspicuous greenish flower spikes during summer, though the foliage is the primary attraction.
