Plantago major 'Purpurea,' commonly known as Purple-Leaved Plantain, is an ornamental variety of the common plantain with striking deep purple to bronze-colored foliage. Its low-growing, rosette-like habit and uniquely colored, broad leaves make it a standout ground cover or edging plant. It occasionally produces tall, slender spikes of greenish flowers, but the plant is primarily valued for its dramatic foliage.
Plantago major 'Purpurea' thrives in a variety of soil conditions, including poor or compacted soils, as long as there is adequate drainage. It is drought-tolerant once established and low-maintenance, making it a versatile addition to gardens. Use it as a ground cover, in rock gardens, or to add contrast in borders. The plant pairs well with ornamental grasses or vibrant flowers for a bold, dynamic display. Deadheading flower spikes can help maintain a tidy appearance, though the blooms add a naturalistic charm if left intact.
