Penstemon whippleanus, commonly known as Dusky Beardtongue, is a hardy, clump-forming perennial native to mountainous regions of North America. It features tubular, bell-shaped flowers in shades ranging from deep purple and maroon to cream and lavender, often with subtle veining. The blooms appear on upright stems, rising above a basal rosette of narrow, lance-shaped green leaves. Its unique, moody flower colors make it a favorite in naturalistic and alpine gardens.
Penstemon whippleanus thrives in well-drained, sandy, or rocky soils and is drought-tolerant once established, making it ideal for xeriscaping or dry gardens. It attracts pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, and it is deer- and rabbit-resistant. This low-maintenance perennial works well in rock gardens, meadows, or native plantings. Deadheading spent blooms encourages prolonged flowering, and its compact size makes it suitable for smaller garden spaces. Pair it with other alpine plants or drought-tolerant perennials such as echinacea, salvia, or ornamental grasses for a harmonious display.
