Penstemon hirsutus var. pygmaeus, commonly known as Pygmy Hairy Beardtongue, is a compact and low-growing perennial. It features delicate spikes of tubular lavender to pale purple flowers with white throats, rising above a dense mat of narrow, semi-evergreen green foliage. This petite variety is ideal for rock gardens, alpine gardens, or as an edging plant.
Penstemon hirsutus var. pygmaeus thrives in well-drained, sandy, or rocky soils and is highly drought-tolerant once established, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping or low-maintenance gardens. It attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies while being deer- and rabbit-resistant. Minimal care is required, though deadheading spent flowers can promote a tidier appearance and encourage prolonged blooming. Pair this plant with other compact perennials, such as sedums, dianthus, or alpine asters, for a vibrant and textured garden display.
