Opuntia humifusa is a hardy, low-growing prickly pear cactus native to eastern North America. Its fleshy, flattened pads are bright green and dotted with small spines, forming a spreading clump over time. In early summer, it produces large, showy yellow flowers with vivid red centers, followed by red, edible fruit that adds ornamental and wildlife value.
Exceptionally drought-tolerant and cold-hardy, this cactus thrives in dry, sandy, or rocky soils and requires excellent drainage. It’s ideal for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and sunny slopes. Once established, it needs little care and is resistant to deer and rabbits. Pads may shrivel slightly in winter as a natural response to cold but rehydrate in spring.
Sun Requirements:
Full Sun. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for best flowering, pad growth, and fruit production.
Maximum Growth Height:
6–12 inches (15–30 cm), spreading wider over time as new pads develop.
Bloom Month:
June to July. Produces bright, golden-yellow flowers in early summer, attracting pollinators and followed by ornamental fruit.
