Monarda punctata, commonly known as Spotted Bee Balm or Horsemint, is a distinctive herbaceous perennial that produces layered whorls of tubular, pale yellow to cream flowers marked with purple or maroon spots. The flowers are surrounded by showy pink, lavender, or pale purple bracts, creating a colorful and unusual tiered appearance. Blooming from midsummer into early fall, this plant adds texture, fragrance, pollinator value, and native charm to borders, meadow gardens, herb gardens, pollinator plantings, or naturalized perennial beds.

Thrives in well-drained soil with dry to medium moisture. Avoid planting in heavy, waterlogged conditions. Requires minimal maintenance once established and shows excellent heat and drought tolerance. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage a tidier appearance and prolong flowering, or leave seed heads for winter interest and wildlife value. Performs best with good air circulation and may self-seed in favorable conditions. Pairs well with echinacea, rudbeckia, liatris, asters, and ornamental grasses for a colorful, wildlife-friendly garden display. Attracts bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial pollinators. Generally avoided by deer and rabbits. Excellent for native plant gardens, sunny borders, cottage-style landscapes, pollinator gardens, meadow plantings, dry gardens, or naturalized areas. Monarda punctata is a unique and aromatic native perennial that thrives in sunny, well-drained gardens, adding spotted flowers and colorful bracts through the summer season. Its fragrant foliage, drought tolerance, and exceptional pollinator appeal make it a valuable choice for low-maintenance and wildlife-friendly landscapes.
