Malva alcea var. fastigiata, commonly known as Hollyhock Mallow, is a bushy, upright perennial known for its large, saucer-shaped flowers in shades of pink or rose. The blooms appear along slender, branching stems and have a delicate, papery texture, adding charm and elegance to cottage gardens or borders. The plant’s deeply lobed, green foliage forms a lush mound, complementing the vibrant flowers.
Malva alcea var. fastigiata thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soils and is drought-tolerant once established. It is highly attractive to pollinators like bees and butterflies, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens. The plant is low-maintenance and deer-resistant, though deadheading spent blooms can encourage prolonged flowering and prevent unwanted self-seeding. This perennial pairs beautifully with other sun-loving plants such as coneflowers, salvias, or ornamental grasses for a colorful and dynamic garden display. Cutting back the plant after flowering promotes fresh growth and a tidy appearance.
