Macleaya microcarpa, commonly known as Plume Poppy, is a tall, herbaceous perennial known for its bold, architectural presence in the garden. The plant features deeply lobed, bluish-green leaves with silvery undersides, creating a striking foliage display. In summer, it produces tall, airy flower spikes with small, creamy-white to pale pink flowers that form feathery plumes, adding texture and movement to borders or large garden spaces.
Macleaya microcarpa thrives in well-drained, fertile soil and prefers consistent moisture but is moderately drought-tolerant once established. This fast-growing plant is low-maintenance, deer-resistant, and attracts pollinators like bees. It spreads via underground rhizomes, so it is best suited for larger spaces or contained planting areas to manage its vigorous growth. Pair it with other tall perennials or ornamental grasses for a dynamic, layered garden display. Regular pruning or cutting back after flowering can help maintain a tidy appearance and encourage fresh growth.
