Lychnis arkwrightii ‘Vesuvius’, commonly known as Vesuvius Campion or Maltese Cross, is a striking herbaceous perennial that produces vivid orange-red to scarlet-red, star-shaped flowers. The blooms are held on upright stems above compact clumps of deep bronze-purple to dark green foliage, creating a bold contrast and dramatic garden presence. Blooming in summer, this plant adds intense color, texture, and eye-catching appeal to borders, cottage gardens, rock gardens, or sunny perennial beds.
Thrives in well-drained soil with dry to medium moisture. Avoid planting in heavy, wet, or waterlogged conditions. Requires minimal maintenance once established and performs best with good air circulation. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage a tidier appearance and prolong flowering. Cut back after flowering if needed to refresh the foliage and maintain a compact habit. Pairs well with salvia, nepeta, coreopsis, ornamental grasses, and silver-leaved perennials for a bold, colourful garden display. Attracts bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Generally avoided by deer and rabbits. Excellent for borders, cottage-style landscapes, rock gardens, edging, containers, or mixed perennial plantings. Lychnis arkwrightii ‘Vesuvius’ is a vibrant and compact perennial that thrives in sunny gardens, adding fiery red-orange blooms and dark foliage for strong contrast.
