Lychnis coronaria, commonly known as Rose Campion, is a striking biennial or short-lived perennial that is loved for its vibrant, magenta, pink, or white, five-petaled flowers and its attractive, soft, silvery-gray foliage. The upright stems and woolly leaves provide a lovely contrast to the bold blooms, making it an excellent choice for cottage gardens, borders, or rock gardens. This plant is often self-seeding, providing a continuous presence in the garden.
Lychnis coronaria thrives in well-drained soils, including sandy or rocky conditions, and is highly drought-tolerant once established. It attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies while being deer- and rabbit-resistant. Deadheading spent blooms encourages prolonged flowering and prevents excessive self-seeding. Pair Rose Campion with other cottage garden favorites like delphiniums, salvia, or lavender for a colorful and textured garden display. Minimal care is required, and its self-seeding nature ensures a recurring presence year after year.
