Lobelia cardinalis, commonly known as Cardinal Flower, is a striking herbaceous perennial prized for its tall, vibrant spikes of brilliant scarlet-red, tubular flowers. These blooms rise above a basal rosette of lance-shaped, dark green leaves. This native North American wildflower is a favorite for pollinator gardens, attracting hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. Its bold, upright habit makes it a standout in moist borders, rain gardens, or naturalized settings.
Lobelia cardinalis thrives in moist to wet soils and is an excellent choice for areas near ponds, streams, or in rain gardens. It requires consistent moisture to perform well and is tolerant of periodic flooding. The plant is deer- and rabbit-resistant and pairs beautifully with other moisture-loving perennials like ferns, astilbes, and irises. To encourage healthy growth and potential self-seeding, allow some flowers to set seed after blooming. In colder climates, adding a layer of mulch in winter helps protect the plant’s roots. Its stunning red flowers and pollinator-friendly traits make it a garden favorite.
