Iliamna remota, commonly known as Kankakee Mallow, is a rare and distinctive herbaceous perennial that produces soft pink to lavender-pink, hollyhock-like flowers with delicate, rounded petals and prominent central stamens. The blooms are held on upright, branching stems above large, maple-like green leaves, creating a bold yet graceful appearance in the garden. Blooming in midsummer, this plant adds native charm, soft colour, and ecological value to borders, native-plant gardens, pollinator plantings, or naturalized perennial beds.

Thrives in well-drained soil with medium moisture. Avoid planting in heavy, waterlogged conditions or extremely dry sites. Requires minimal maintenance once established and performs best in open, sunny locations with good air circulation. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage a tidier appearance, or leave seed heads for natural interest and wildlife value. Pairs well with echinacea, rudbeckia, monarda, asters, and ornamental grasses for a colourful, native-inspired garden display. Attracts bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Generally avoided by deer and rabbits. Excellent for native plant gardens, sunny borders, pollinator gardens, meadow-style plantings, conservation gardens, or naturalized landscapes. Iliamna remota is a unique and valuable native perennial that thrives in sunny gardens, adding soft mallow-like flowers and broad textured foliage with a natural, prairie-style presence. Its rarity, pollinator appeal, and graceful summer bloom make it a meaningful choice for wildlife-friendly and native-focused landscapes.
