Hosta 'Sum and Substance'

Hosta 'Sum and Substance' is a dramatic and highly popular perennial known for its impressive size and striking golden-green foliage. One of the largest hostas available today, with 16", broadly ovate leaves and a huge, mounded form. The large, thick leaves are slightly corrugated, providing texture and a lush appearance in the garden. This hosta creates a bold statement, often used as a focal point in shade gardens. In summer, tall scapes rise above the foliage, bearing pale lavender flowers that add an elegant touch.

Hosta 'Sum and Substance' thrives in rich, well-drained, and consistently moist soils. It is highly resistant to slugs and other pests due to its thick, waxy leaves. This low-maintenance perennial pairs beautifully with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-loving plants, adding texture and color to woodland gardens. Sun Requirements:

Full Sun to Partial Shade. Exhibits greater sun tolerance than most hostas. Leaf color varies with the amount of available sun from light green to chartreuse to gold; prefers ¼-¾ day of full sun. 

Maximum Growth Height:

60–72 inches (150–180 cm). Flower scapes can reach up to 48 inches (120 cm) tall.

Bloom Month:

July to August: Blooms in mid to late summer with pale lavender flowers that attract pollinators such as bees.
