Herniaria glabra, commonly known as Green Carpet or Rupturewort, is a low-growing, mat-forming perennial ground cover. It features small, oval, green leaves that turn bronze or reddish in cooler weather. This dense, creeping plant creates a lush, moss-like appearance, making it an excellent choice for filling gaps between stepping stones, rock gardens, or as a lawn alternative. It is highly resilient and tolerates light foot traffic.
Herniaria glabra thrives in well-drained soils and is highly drought-tolerant once established, making it ideal for xeriscaping or areas with low water availability. It is deer-resistant, easy to care for, and spreads slowly, forming a dense mat over time. This plant works well in rock gardens, gravel paths, or as a low-maintenance, no-mow lawn substitute in sunny locations. It is also tolerant of poor soil conditions and is a great choice for erosion control on slopes.
Sun Requirements:
Full Sun to Partial Shade. Thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates.
Maximum Growth Height:
1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm), forming a compact, low-maintenance ground cover.
Bloom Month:
June to August. Produces tiny, inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers in summer that are not particularly showy but add a subtle charm to the plant.
