Heliopsis scabra ‘Summer Sun’, commonly known as Summer Sun False Sunflower, is a bright and vigorous herbaceous perennial that produces abundant golden-yellow, daisy-like flowers with deeper yellow centres. The blooms are held on upright, branching stems above clumps of rough-textured, dark green foliage, creating a cheerful and natural appearance in the garden. Blooming from midsummer into early fall, this plant adds bold colour, height, and long-lasting seasonal interest to borders, cottage gardens, pollinator plantings, or sunny perennial beds.
Thrives in well-drained soil with medium moisture. Avoid planting in heavy, waterlogged conditions. Requires minimal maintenance once established and performs well in average garden soil. Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage prolonged flowering and maintain a tidy appearance. Cut back lightly in midsummer if needed to promote bushier growth and reduce flopping. Pairs well with echinacea, rudbeckia, monarda, salvia, and ornamental grasses for a bright, colorful garden display. Attracts bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Generally avoided by deer and rabbits. Excellent for sunny borders, cottage-style landscapes, pollinator gardens, meadow-style plantings, cut flower gardens, or mixed perennial beds. Heliopsis scabra ‘Summer Sun’ is a dependable and cheerful perennial that thrives in sunny gardens, adding masses of golden flowers over a long season. Its sturdy habit, easy-care nature, and excellent pollinator appeal make it a valuable choice for low-maintenance perennial plantings and vibrant summer displays.
