Helenium autumnale 'Helena Red Shades,' commonly known as Sneezeweed, is a vibrant and hardy perennial that produces daisy-like flowers in shades of deep red to scarlet, often with hints of orange or yellow near the center. Each bloom features a prominent, dark brown central cone. The plant has an upright, bushy habit with lance-shaped green foliage, adding structure and color to late-season gardens.
Helenium autumnale 'Helena Red Shades' thrives in well-drained, fertile soils but can tolerate wetter conditions, making it a good choice for areas near ponds or streams. The plant is low-maintenance and attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies while being deer-resistant. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage continued blooming, and cutting back the plant by one-third in early summer can help maintain a more compact habit. It pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, asters, or other late-season bloomers like rudbeckia and echinacea for a stunning garden display.
