Geranium pratense 'Dark Reiter,' commonly known as Meadow Cranesbill, is a compact and striking perennial admired for its deeply divided, dark purple to almost black foliage. In summer, it produces delicate, cup-shaped flowers in shades of lavender-blue, creating a beautiful contrast against its rich foliage. This low-maintenance plant is perfect for borders, rock gardens, or cottage-style plantings.
Geranium pratense 'Dark Reiter' thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil and is drought-tolerant once established. It is deer-resistant and attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens. After blooming, cutting back the plant can encourage fresh foliage growth and potentially a second, smaller flush of flowers. It pairs well with ornamental grasses and other perennials like salvia, sedum, or coreopsis for a striking garden display.
