False Indigo, or Baptisia, is a hardy, long-lived perennial prized for its upright, bushy growth habit and vibrant blooms. Depending on the species or cultivar, flowers come in shades of blue, purple, white, yellow, or even bi-color, resembling pea blossoms. These flowers are followed by decorative, inflated seed pods that rattle when shaken. Its trifoliate, gray-green foliage adds texture and interest throughout the growing season. False Indigo is an excellent choice for borders, prairie plantings, and cottage gardens.
Baptisia thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil and is drought-tolerant once established, making it a low-maintenance choice for sunny gardens. It attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies and is deer- and rabbit-resistant. The seed pods add autumn interest, and the plant requires minimal care beyond initial establishment. False Indigo pairs well with ornamental grasses and other sun-loving perennials like coneflowers and rudbeckias.
