Eupatorium coelestinum, commonly known as Mistflower or Hardy Ageratum, is a spreading herbaceous perennial that produces clusters of soft, fluffy, lavender-blue to violet-blue flowers. The blooms are held on upright stems above fresh green, toothed foliage, creating a light, airy, and natural appearance in the garden. Blooming from late summer into fall, this plant adds cool color, pollinator value, and late-season charm to borders, woodland edges, rain gardens, meadows, or naturalized perennial beds.
Thrives in moist, well-drained soil with medium to wet moisture. Avoid planting in extremely dry conditions unless supplemental water is provided. Requires minimal maintenance once established and spreads by rhizomes, making it best suited to areas where it has room to naturalize. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage a tidier appearance and reduce self-seeding, or leave seed heads for natural interest. Pairs well with asters, goldenrod, rudbeckia, ferns, and ornamental grasses for a lush, late-season garden display. Attracts bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Generally avoided by deer and rabbits. Excellent for pollinator gardens, woodland edges, moist borders, rain gardens, meadow-style landscapes, or naturalized plantings. Eupatorium coelestinum is a dependable and wildlife-friendly perennial that thrives in moist garden settings, adding soft blue flowers when many summer plants are fading. Its spreading habit, late bloom time, and strong pollinator appeal make it a valuable choice for informal and naturalistic landscapes.
