Eryngium planum ‘Silver Salentino’, commonly known as Silver Salentino Sea Holly, is a distinctive herbaceous perennial that produces rounded, thistle-like flower heads surrounded by spiky, silvery-blue bracts. The blooms are held on upright, branching stems above clumps of toothed, deep green basal foliage, creating a bold, architectural, and metallic appearance in the garden. Blooming from midsummer into late summer, this plant adds texture, structure, and unique silvery-blue colour to borders, gravel gardens, cottage gardens, pollinator plantings, or sunny perennial beds.
Thrives in well-drained soil with dry to medium moisture. Avoid planting in heavy, wet, or waterlogged conditions. Requires minimal maintenance once established and shows excellent heat and drought tolerance. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage a tidier appearance, or leave flower heads standing for winter interest and decorative value. Pairs well with lavender, salvia, echinacea, ornamental grasses, nepeta, and yarrow for a bold, drought-tolerant garden display. Attracts bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Generally avoided by deer and rabbits. Excellent for sunny borders, gravel gardens, cottage-style landscapes, pollinator gardens, cut flower gardens, dried arrangements, or low-maintenance perennial plantings. Eryngium planum ‘Silver Salentino’ is a striking and durable perennial that thrives in sunny gardens, adding metallic silver-blue flower heads and strong architectural texture through the summer season. Its drought tolerance, unique form, and excellent value for fresh or dried arrangements make it a valuable choice for low-maintenance and wildlife-friendly landscapes.
