Echium russicum, commonly known as Red Viper’s Bugloss, is a striking biennial or short-lived perennial. It features tall, narrow spikes covered in vibrant crimson to burgundy tubular flowers, with bristly stems and narrow, lance-shaped leaves. This drought-tolerant plant is a favorite for naturalistic and wildflower garden designs, adding a bold splash of color and vertical interest.
Echium russicum prefers well-drained, sandy, or rocky soils and is highly drought-tolerant once established. It is attractive to pollinators, including bees and butterflies, and is deer-resistant. The plant is well-suited for xeriscaping or low-maintenance gardens. While it self-seeds readily, it is not invasive, making it a reliable choice for naturalizing in wildflower meadows or cottage-style plantings. Deadheading spent flowers can help maintain a tidy appearance and encourage a longer blooming season.
