Cephalaria gigantea, commonly known as Giant Scabious, is a towering and elegant perennial that produces large, pale yellow, pincushion-like flowers on slender, branching stems. The blooms sway gracefully above a mound of deeply lobed, dark green foliage, adding movement and vertical interest to borders and meadow plantings. Its airy and delicate flowers make it a favorite in naturalistic and cottage garden designs.
Cephalaria gigantea grows best in moist, well-drained soils but is adaptable to average garden conditions and moderately drought-tolerant once established. Minimal maintenance is required; deadheading spent blooms can encourage additional flowering, and cutting back the stems after the blooming period keeps the plant tidy. It pairs beautifully with tall perennials such as Echinacea, Delphiniums, or ornamental grasses to create a layered, textural display. The flowers are highly attractive to bees and butterflies, enhancing its value as a pollinator-friendly plant, while its height and sturdy stems make it resistant to deer and rabbits. With its towering stature, soft yellow blooms, and graceful habit, Giant Scabious is an excellent choice for adding drama and charm to large borders, wildflower meadows, or naturalized landscapes.
