Centranthus ruber var. coccineus ‘Rosenrot’, commonly known as Rosenrot Red Valerian or Jupiter’s Beard, is a colourful herbaceous perennial that produces dense clusters of small, star-shaped flowers in rich rose-red to crimson-red tones. The blooms are held on upright, branching stems above clumps of blue-green to grey-green, lance-shaped foliage, creating a soft, airy, and natural appearance in the garden. Blooming from late spring into summer, this plant adds vibrant colour, fragrance, and pollinator value to borders, cottage gardens, rock gardens, gravel gardens, or sunny perennial beds.
Thrives in well-drained soil with dry to medium moisture. Avoid planting in heavy, wet, or waterlogged conditions. Requires minimal maintenance once established and shows excellent heat and drought tolerance. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage prolonged flowering and reduce unwanted self-seeding. Cut back lightly after the main bloom period to refresh the plant and encourage possible rebloom. Pairs well with lavender, salvia, nepeta, dianthus, and ornamental grasses for a soft, drought-tolerant garden display. Attracts bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Generally avoided by deer and rabbits. Excellent for sunny borders, cottage-style landscapes, rock gardens, gravel gardens, walls, containers, or low-maintenance perennial plantings. Centranthus ruber var. coccineus ‘Rosenrot’ is a dependable and free-flowering perennial that thrives in sunny gardens, adding rich red flower clusters and a relaxed Mediterranean-style presence. Its drought tolerance, long bloom period, and strong pollinator appeal make it a valuable choice for dry, sunny, wildlife-friendly landscapes.
