Centaurea macrocephala, commonly known as Giant Knapweed or Bighead Knapweed, is a bold herbaceous perennial that produces large, globe-shaped, thistle-like flowers in bright golden yellow. The flowers emerge from distinctive papery, brownish bracts and are held on tall, sturdy stems above clumps of broad, textured green foliage. Blooming in summer, this plant adds strong architectural form, vibrant colour, and excellent vertical interest to borders, cottage gardens, wildflower plantings, or cut flower gardens.
Thrives in well-drained soil with dry to medium moisture. Avoid planting in consistently wet or waterlogged conditions. Requires minimal maintenance once established and shows good drought tolerance. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage a tidier appearance and help reduce unwanted self-seeding. Pairs well with ornamental grasses, salvia, echinacea, and other sun-loving perennials for a bold, naturalistic garden display. Attracts bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Generally avoided by deer and rabbits. Excellent for sunny borders, cottage-style landscapes, wildflower gardens, or fresh and dried floral arrangements. Centaurea macrocephala is a strong and eye-catching perennial that thrives in sunny gardens, adding height, texture, and brilliant yellow summer color. Its sturdy stems and long-lasting blooms make it especially valuable for cut flower use and for creating a bold focal point in perennial plantings.
