Campanula americana, commonly known as Tall Bellflower, is a striking biennial or short-lived perennial with tall, slender stems adorned with star-shaped, lavender-blue flowers. Unlike many bellflowers, the blooms are open-faced rather than nodding, adding a unique touch to its appearance. The flowers rise above lance-shaped green foliage and create an elegant, airy effect in wildflower gardens, borders, and naturalized landscapes.
Campanula americana grows best in moist, well-drained soils but adapts well to average or even dry conditions once established. It requires minimal maintenance; deadheading spent flowers can encourage prolonged blooming, while allowing some flowers to go to seed ensures natural self-sowing. This plant pairs beautifully with other tall perennials like Rudbeckia, Echinacea, and ornamental grasses for a layered, meadow-like effect. The flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, while the plant is generally deer-resistant. With its tall, graceful stems, unique blooms, and adaptability, Tall Bellflower is an excellent choice for pollinator-friendly gardens, woodland edges, and prairie plantings.
