Calluna vulgaris, commonly known as Heather, is a low-growing, evergreen shrub known for its dense, needle-like foliage and small, bell-shaped flowers. The flowers, which range in color from white and pink to purple, bloom along upright spikes, creating a vibrant carpet of color. Its foliage also adds seasonal interest, often turning shades of bronze, gold, or red in colder months. Heather is an excellent choice for rock gardens, borders, and slopes, especially in acidic soils.
Calluna vulgaris grows best in moist, well-drained, acidic soils and thrives in sandy or peaty conditions, making it ideal for heathland-inspired gardens. It is drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance; light pruning after flowering helps maintain its compact shape and encourages fresh growth. This plant pairs beautifully with other acid-loving plants like Rhododendrons, Azaleas, and ornamental grasses for a layered and colorful garden display. Heather is highly attractive to pollinators, including bees and butterflies, and is resistant to deer and rabbits. With its year-round appeal, vibrant flowers, and adaptability, Heather is a versatile and low-maintenance choice for sunny borders, naturalized areas, and coastal gardens.
