Bergenia cordifolia 'Winterglut,' commonly known as Heartleaf Bergenia or Elephant Ears, is a hardy evergreen perennial admired for its bold, leathery, heart-shaped green leaves that turn deep red or bronze in winter. In early spring, it produces striking clusters of rich reddish-pink, bell-shaped flowers on stout stems, creating a vibrant display above the dense foliage. Its year-round interest makes it a standout in shaded or partially sunny areas.
Bergenia cordifolia 'Winterglut' grows best in moist, well-drained soils enriched with organic matter but is highly adaptable to a variety of soil types, including clay or sandy soils. It is drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance; simply remove faded flowers and damaged leaves to maintain a tidy appearance. It pairs well with shade-loving plants such as ferns, hostas, and hellebores for a layered and textured garden display. The flowers attract pollinators like bees, while its tough, leathery leaves make it deer- and rabbit-resistant. This versatile perennial is perfect for use as ground cover, edging, or in mixed borders, providing a combination of structure, color, and texture throughout the year.
