Astilboides tabularis, commonly known as Shieldleaf Rodgersia, is a striking herbaceous perennial prized for its enormous, rounded, shield-shaped leaves that can reach up to 3 feet in diameter. The bold foliage creates a dramatic, architectural presence in shady or woodland gardens. In early to midsummer, it produces tall, airy panicles of tiny, creamy-white flowers on upright stems, adding delicate contrast to its large, lush foliage.
Astilboides tabularis grows best in moist, rich, well-drained soils and thrives in consistently damp conditions, making it ideal for shaded water features or bog gardens. It requires minimal maintenance; removing spent flowers and cutting back old foliage in fall helps maintain its appearance. This plant pairs beautifully with other shade-loving perennials like ferns, hostas, and ligularias for a layered and textured woodland garden. While its flowers attract bees and other pollinators, its foliage is generally unbothered by deer and rabbits. With its dramatic leaves and low-maintenance requirements, Shieldleaf Rodgersia is an excellent choice for creating focal points in shady borders or naturalized garden settings.
