Aster novae-angliae, commonly known as New England Aster, is a tall, upright perennial known for its profuse clusters of vibrant, daisy-like flowers in shades of purple, pink, or lavender, with golden-yellow centers. Its lance-shaped, hairy green leaves provide a lush backdrop to the showy blooms. This North American native is a fall garden favorite, bringing vibrant color to borders, wildflower meadows, and pollinator gardens when many other plants have finished blooming.

Aster novae-angliae grows best in moist, well-drained soils enriched with organic matter but adapts well to average garden conditions. Regular deadheading can encourage prolonged blooming, and cutting back the stems by half in early summer helps maintain a more compact form. It pairs beautifully with other late-season perennials like Solidago (Goldenrod), Echinacea, and ornamental grasses for a dynamic autumnal display. Highly attractive to pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, it also serves as a larval host for several butterfly species. Naturally deer- and rabbit-resistant, this hardy and long-blooming perennial is an excellent choice for low-maintenance, wildlife-friendly gardens and naturalized landscapes.
