Asclepias exaltata, commonly known as Poke Milkweed, is a rare, tall, elegant perennial native to woodland edges and shady areas. It features drooping clusters of pale greenish-white to lavender flowers with long, curved petals that attract numerous pollinators. The blooms rise above large, lance-shaped green leaves on sturdy stems, creating a graceful appearance. This milkweed species is an essential host plant for monarch butterfly caterpillars and provides nectar for bees and other pollinators.
Asclepias exaltata grows best in moist, well-drained soils enriched with organic matter but is adaptable to average soil conditions. It requires minimal maintenance and is drought-tolerant once established, though regular watering during dry periods improves its performance. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage tidiness, while allowing seed pods to mature supports its role as a host plant. This species pairs well with other shade-tolerant perennials like ferns, wild ginger, and Trillium for a natural woodland aesthetic. It is highly attractive to pollinators, including butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, and its coarse foliage makes it deer-resistant. With its ecological value, adaptability, and understated beauty, Poke Milkweed is an excellent addition to pollinator-friendly and woodland gardens.
