Armeria maritima, commonly known as Sea Thrift, is a compact, evergreen perennial that forms dense, grassy tufts of dark green foliage. It produces charming, globe-shaped clusters of small pink, white, or lavender flowers on slender stems that rise above the foliage. This hardy and salt-tolerant plant is ideal for rock gardens, borders, or as a ground cover in coastal and alpine settings, adding vibrant color and texture to garden spaces.
Armeria maritima grows best in well-drained, sandy, or rocky soils and thrives in poor soil conditions, making it perfect for xeriscaping or coastal gardens. It requires minimal maintenance; deadheading spent flowers encourages prolonged blooming, and occasional trimming helps maintain its tidy appearance. This versatile plant pairs well with other low-growing perennials like sedum, dianthus, and creeping thyme for a layered, textured effect. Its nectar-rich flowers attract bees and butterflies, while its dense, tufted foliage is deer- and rabbit-resistant. With its charming flowers, drought tolerance, and adaptability to challenging soils, Sea Thrift is an excellent choice for rock gardens, edging, or ground cover in sunny locations.
