Aralia cordata f. aurea, commonly known as Golden Japanese Spikenard, is a bold, herbaceous perennial with large, golden-yellow, heart-shaped leaves that bring a luminous presence to shaded gardens. In late summer, it produces small, creamy-white flowers in loose clusters, followed by ornamental black berries that attract birds. Its striking foliage and architectural form make it a standout feature in woodland gardens or shady borders.
Aralia cordata f. aurea grows best in moist, well-drained soils enriched with organic matter, making it ideal for woodland settings or shaded garden spaces. It requires minimal care—regular watering in dry periods and cutting back stems in late autumn help maintain its vigor. This plant pairs beautifully with other shade-loving companions like ferns, hostas, and astilbes, creating a layered, textural effect in the garden. The flowers are lightly attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies, and the berries provide food for birds in late summer. Deer- and rabbit-resistant due to its slightly coarse foliage, this striking perennial adds dramatic color and texture to shaded areas, making it a favorite for naturalistic and shade gardens.
