Aquilegia canadensis, commonly known as Wild Columbine, is a delicate North American native perennial featuring nodding, bell-shaped flowers with vibrant red outer petals, yellow centers, and long, curved spurs. The blooms rise above soft, blue-green, lobed foliage, adding an elegant and naturalistic touch to woodland gardens, borders, and pollinator-friendly spaces.

Aquilegia canadensis grows best in moist, well-drained soils enriched with organic matter but adapts to sandy or rocky conditions with minimal care. Deadheading spent flowers can extend blooming, while allowing some to go to seed encourages self-sowing, ensuring a naturalized appearance in the garden. Cutting back foliage after flowering promotes fresh growth and a tidy appearance. This columbine pairs well with other woodland plants such as ferns, hostas, and wild ginger for a lush, layered effect. It is highly attractive to pollinators, especially hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, and is naturally deer- and rabbit-resistant, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance, wildlife-friendly gardens. With its graceful blooms and airy foliage, Wild Columbine brings charm, movement, and ecological value to naturalized landscapes, woodland gardens, or cottage-style borders.
