Althaea officinalis, commonly known as Marshmallow, is a hardy, herbaceous perennial known for its medicinal properties and ornamental appeal. The plant features soft, velvety, gray-green leaves and tall, upright stems adorned with pale pink to white, funnel-shaped flowers. The flowers, which bloom along the upper parts of the stems, attract pollinators and add subtle beauty to cottage gardens, herb gardens, or naturalized landscapes.
Thrives in moist, well-drained soils but can tolerate average garden soil. It prefers slightly alkaline soil. Requires minimal maintenance. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells. Prune back after flowering to tidy up the plant and encourage fresh growth. Pairs well with other medicinal and pollinator-friendly plants like echinacea, lavender, and calendula. Historically used for soothing sore throats and digestive issues; the roots and leaves are harvested for herbal remedies. Attracts bees and butterflies while being deer-resistant. Its soft foliage and delicate flowers make it an excellent addition to herb gardens, cottage gardens, or wetland edges. Althaea officinalis is a versatile, easy-to-grow perennial with a combination of practical uses and ornamental appeal, making it a great choice for both traditional and naturalized garden settings.
