Alcea rugosa, commonly known as Russian Hollyhock, is a hardy, long-lived perennial hollyhock species. It is distinguished by its tall, upright growth, rough, lobed green leaves, and striking single, soft yellow flowers. These funnel-shaped blooms appear on tall spikes, adding vertical interest to cottage gardens, naturalized areas, and mixed borders. Compared to other hollyhocks, this species is more disease-resistant and drought-tolerant.
Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It tolerates poor soils and is drought-tolerant once established. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming and reduce self-seeding if desired. In windy areas, staking may be necessary to support the tall flower spikes. Alcea rugosa self-seeds easily, ensuring its presence in the garden for years without requiring replanting.Pairs beautifully with other cottage garden favorites like foxgloves, delphiniums, and echinacea for a dynamic and colourful display. Attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The coarse foliage helps deter deer and rabbits. Perfect for back borders, cottage gardens, or as a tall accent plant in sunny areas. Alcea rugosa is a low-maintenance and resilient hollyhock variety that brings vertical structure and soft yellow blooms to gardens. Its disease resistance, drought tolerance, and long blooming period make it a valuable addition to traditional or naturalistic landscapes.
