Alcea rosea subsp. ficifolia, commonly known as Antwerp Fig Leaf Hollyhock, is a hardy biennial or short-lived perennial distinguished by its uniquely lobed, fig-shaped leaves and charming, single or semi-double flowers. The blooms come in a wide range of colors, including pastel shades of pink, yellow, white, red, and purple. Compared to common hollyhocks, this subspecies has a more naturalistic appearance and is known for its better drought tolerance and disease resistance. It is a great choice for cottage gardens, naturalized areas, or as a vertical accent in borders.

Thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Tolerates dry conditions once established. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage prolonged blooming, and stake tall plants in windy areas to prevent stems from toppling. This hollyhock is less prone to rust compared to other varieties. Readily self-seeds, ensuring its presence in the garden year after year. Attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The tough stems and foliage deter deer and rabbits. Works well in cottage gardens, wildflower meadows, or as a back-border planting. With its charming blooms, unique foliage, and hardy nature, Alcea rosea subsp. ficifolia (Antwerp Fig Leaf Hollyhock) is an excellent addition to low-maintenance, sunny garden spaces, blending beautifully with other cottage garden staples such as delphiniums, foxgloves, and coreopsis.
