Commonly known as Pink Spike Bugbane or Pink Spike Snakeroot, is a striking perennial prized for its ornamental foliage and fragrant flowers. It features deep bronze-purple, finely divided leaves that provide a dramatic backdrop in shaded garden areas. In late summer to early fall, it produces tall, slender spikes adorned with pale pink, fluffy, fragrant flowers that rise above the foliage, adding vertical interest and attracting pollinators such as butterflies and hummingbirds.
'Pink Spike' thrives in organically rich, moisture-retentive soils and should be situated in sheltered locations away from harsh sun exposure or drying winds. Regular watering is essential to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Its deer-resistant nature and attractive appearance make it a valuable addition to shaded borders, woodland gardens, or cottage garden settings.
Sun Requirements:
Prefers partial shade to full shade. While it can tolerate full sun in cooler climates, adequate moisture must be maintained to prevent leaf scorch. In substantial shade, the flower spires may lean toward brighter light.
Maximum Growth Height:
3 to 5 feet (90 to 150 cm) and spreads 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 cm) wide. The foliage mound usually rises to about 2 feet, with flowering stems extending above.
Bloom Time:
August to September, providing late-season interest in the garden.
