Nine plants every Zone 4 garden should have

Nine plants every Zone 4 garden should have

A garden that blooms from May to October isn't luck — it's sequencing. Early bloomers wake the garden up, mid-summer plants carry the show through the heat, and late bloomers keep it going right up to frost. These nine perennials cover all three stages, they're proven in our winters, and at Gardener Nation, we have them all.

Nine plants. Three seasons. One garden that never has a dead week.

Early bloomers wake up the garden (May-June)

Dicentra - Bleeding heart

Arching stems strung with rows of heart-shaped blooms in pink or white. One of the best plants for shade or part shade, and one of the most-loved spring perennials for a reason — it looks like nothing else in the garden.

Allium

When most of the bulbs are over, the first real "wow" of the season is in June when the Allium join the party. Tall stems topped with perfect purple globes, blooming just as everything else is getting started. Deer and rabbits won't touch them, and they multiply on their own year after year.

Aquilegia - Columbine

Delicate, nodding, bell-shaped flowers in shades of red, purple, yellow, and blue. Self-seeds gently to fill gaps, attracts hummingbirds early in the season, and handles both sun and part shade.

Mid-summer: the main event (July-August)

Leucanthamum - Shasta daisy

Classic white petals, golden centres, blooms for weeks. Tall and dwarf varieties to suit your garden plan. The plant most people picture when they think "perennial garden" — reliable, cheerful, and excellent for cutting.

Heliopsis - False sunflower

Bright yellow, orange and red daisy-like blooms on sturdy stems that hold up through wind and rain. Long blooming, drought-tolerant once established, and a magnet for pollinators all summer.

Echinacea - Cone flower

The backbone of a Zone 4 perennial bed. Now in a variety of colours and height. Deer-resistant once established, blooms for months, and the seed heads feed birds well into fall if you leave them standing.

Late season blooming until frost (September - October)

Japanese anemone - Windflower

Tall, graceful, and blooming when most of the garden is winding down. Soft pink or white flowers that float above the foliage from late summer into October — one of the best plants for extending the season.

Helenium autumnale - Sneezeweed

Rich oranges, reds, and golds that look like fall itself. Blooms right through to hard frost and brings warmth to the garden exactly when it's needed.

Karl Foerster grass

Upright, narrow, and architectural. Feathery seed heads catch the light and stand through winter, giving structure to the garden long after everything else has gone dormant.
